Monmouth Rugby wins third annual Son of a Beach Rugby Tournament
On a wet and soggy Saturday afternoon, teams from northern New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., came together along with Delmarva Rugby for a full day of play. The downpour may have limited the number of spectators but it did not dampen the moods of the 200 rugby players who showed up to play at Rehoboth Elementary. The day started out with a dominant performance by eventual champion Monmouth County Rugby as they defeated West Potomac 50-7. Monmouth then took on a game but overmatched home team, Delmarva Rugby, and came away with a 20-5 victory to move themselves into the final four. Last year’s winners, the Amish Assassins, also won out in their division. They were joined by the Wild Rovers and Delmarva Rugby, which edged in on points.
The next round saw the Amish Assassins and Monmouth win out to set up the final. That game was fought in some awful weather but both teams were game to slog it out in the mud. There were a lot of dropped balls and much slipping occurring. This led to a defensive struggle with only one try scored by both sides. The difference in the end was Monmouth making the points after for a 7-5 victory.
Even though Delmarva Rugby ended up going 0-3 on the day, it was an excellent day for the young players of the club. The teams invited to this year’s tournament were all very high-caliber clubs with three of them being Division 2 clubs and the rest being Division 3 teams.
Of special note is Whitehorse Rugby, which won the prestigious Toilet Bowl Award as the last-place club in the tournament.
Next year’s tournament is set for May 20, 2017.
