Haven’t we seen enough green space and trees disappear? Can’t anyone put some controls on what is allowed to be eradicated? I’m referring to the demise of the beautiful, old cedar tree at the intersection of Savannah and Wescoats roads in Lewes. Many of us are disappointed with the negative impacts generated by these “improvements” to our roadways. What we’ve been left with is a sterile landscape. In this case, accompanied by the horrendous, gigantic silver power poles recently installed, the result could be construed as a setting for the futuristic movie “Dune.”
On one hand, Delaware has multiple programs to increase the tree population and enhance our tree canopy. But yet, there seems to be little forethought for trying to save existing, vibrant species when planning “essential” improvements. I would encourage DelDOT, in its planning process, to consider trees as important as archaeological and cultural sites.
Wouldn’t it have been great if this beautiful, old tree became a focal point of the realignment project?
Once ancient trees are gone, they’re gone forever.
