My favorite gaming YouTube channels

August 15, 2019

I haven’t had cable for a few years and I don’t miss it at all. I spend just as much time watching YouTube as I do watching Netflix or Hulu, and when I’m not watching TV I’m playing a game. Many people still see YouTube as something to be watched on a computer or phone, but my husband and I watch YouTube on our living room TV almost daily.   While I enjoy all types of YouTube channels, I naturally find myself watching a lot of gaming-related videos. Not “Let's Play” videos per say, but videos related to gaming news, reviews, and video essays about games and the ideas/themes in them. Some videos are funny, while some have a more serious tone. Here are five of my favorite gaming-related YouTube channels.

Spawn Wave

Spawn Wave is one of my favorite channels for gaming news. I love Jonathan’s personality and how he delivers news. I love the way his videos look. I love how he doesn’t have super annoying background music playing the entire time like many channels do. If you’re wondering what’s going on in the gaming world, he’s got you covered. I appreciate the time and effort he puts into his videos and I highly recommend checking out his channel.

Videogamedunkey

Remember how I said some of the videos are funny? Videogamedunkey, better known as Dunkey, is the channel I go to when I need to laugh. I love that he never takes himself too seriously, but he definitely makes a lot of really good points in some of his videos. I highly recommend checking out this “dunkview” of Super Mario Odyssey. He perfectly sums up how I feel about the game.

PlayStation Access

You all know I’m a big fan of PlayStation and their exclusives, so naturally I’m a big fan of a channel that covers PlayStation games exclusively. What I really love about PlayStation Access is the hosts. They’re all genuinely funny and each has a fun personality. I love the weekly “Friday Feature,” where host Rob Pearson “…chats about his favorite oddities from the world of PlayStation.”

YongYea

YongYea is one of my favorite gaming channels on YouTube because he covers all the biggest news in the gaming community, but what I really love is that he always calls companies out when they’re participating in shady business practices (loot boxes, etc.). I love his delivery - he definitely has a “radio voice.” He covers gaming news and discussions mostly, but he also does reviews. I can always count on YongYea to fill me in on the latest news in the gaming world.

Daniel Ibbertson (Slope’s Game Room)

I just absolutely adore Daniel Ibbertson (AKA Slope’s Game Room). He covers retro games and creates video essays about the history of game series, consoles, and more. I love his “Kick-Scammers” series, where he tells the stories of the items on Kickstarter that failed miserably. These are items that either failed because they just weren’t a good idea to begin with, or because the creator was out to scam people from the start. “DJ Slope” has a wonderful British accent and I just really love the aesthetic of his videos.
