Nellie Shaffer, cared for others

Nellie Shaffer, 93, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Delaware Hospice Center.

She is preceded in death by her longtime love, Lewis G. Newsome. She is survived by two children, three stepchildren and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for always caring for others and making amazing food.

She met her lifelong partner of 50 years, Lewis G. Newsome, in Camden, N.J. The two shared a love that was infectious, making those around them strive for a similar love. Whether you were blood-related or adopted (friends turned family), Nellie was known as Grandma.

She was born in Alloway Township, N.J., Dec. 14, 1929, to George Davis and Catherine Warren. She was the eldest of 10 brothers and sisters. She dedicated her life as a servant not only to her family and friends but in her faith in Jesus Christ. She often recounted memories of spending cherished time with grandchildren. She was active in the Lewes/Rehoboth community, attending the Cape Henlopen Senior Center and St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church.

A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, June 5, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford. The funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Delaware Hospice Center of Milford for their outstanding care in keeping Nellie comfortable as her time with us came to an end.
