New Ellen Rice Studio to host events Dec. 13-14

December 12, 2019

The new Ellen Rice Studio, Gallery and Learning Center in Ocean View will host events this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14.

Married couple Aida Waserstein and Eric Doroshow, both professionals in the legal field, will share their creative sides from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday. Waserstein is a published author of a thought-provoking and inspiring children’s book. Doroshow is a painter, researcher and author who writes about ancient Israel.

Waserstein will read from and personalize copies of her children’s book “My Name is Aida,” the story of her journey as a 13-year-old Cuban-Jewish girl who left her home as an unaccompanied minor, went to the United States by herself in 1961 through a program later known as Pedro Pan, then studied, worked hard and eventually became a judge.

The book depicts the child’s feelings about leaving the only country she had known, her bewilderment in a new place where she did not know the language, and her adjustment to an unknown environment. She was distressed about feeling different but through her journey, she flourished. She learned that each person is unique and that being different is good; it helps to build a stronger, more resilient society.

“It's a very inspiring story, designed to be of help to children in foster care, but I think it's a story for all,” said Rice.

Doroshow, founder of the law firm Doroshow, Pasquale, Krawitz and Bhaya, will present and personalize his archival giclée print, "The Twelve Tribes of Israel" and the first draft of his book telling the stories of the tribes, a journey back in time to the beginnings of both the Jewish and Christian religions.

His print contains 12 watercolors, each inspired by ancient descriptions of specific subjects and colors related to the tribes. Doroshow will introduce a new 8-by-10-inch print size during the event.

Joanne Guilfoil, a retired university professor of art and published book author and illustrator, will appear from 12 to 4 p.m., Saturday.

Guilfoil, author of “Bethany Beach, Now and Then” and a series of books about other towns, the chicken industry and the Naval Academy, will do a meet and greet to introduce the series of lessons on watercolor, acrylic and gouache she will teach at the learning center beginning in January.

All are welcome to attend these events. Refreshments of fresh-baked cakes and cookies, Rice’s special hot apple cider recipe, hot coffee, and wine and cheese will be offered.

The new Ellen Rice Studio, Gallery and Learning Center is located at 30370 Cedar Neck Road, Ocean View, just past big Fish Grill on the left and on the way to G&E Hardware, the James Farm Ecological Preserve and the VFW.

Cedar Neck Road is only accessible via Coastal Highway and Fred Hudson Road at this time due to a temporary closure of Central Avenue and a 5-mile detour if coming from the west.
