New garden and water fountain enhance Lewes Canalfront Park

November 5, 2016

Friends of Lewes Canalfront Park announced two major enhancements to the park, made possible by contributions and fundraising efforts by the group and volunteers providing their skills. A combination water fountain and bottle refilling station was installed by the athletic courts and playground. This was a welcome addition, given the closest drinking water was on the opposite end of the park.

Harry Caswell, owner of Harry Caswell Inc. Plumbing, Mechanical and Utility Contractor, generously provided his skilled technicians for the installation. Janet Sydnor, chair of the Friends board, said “A water fountain has long been at the top of our wish list for the park, and thanks to Harry Caswell and his team, we were able to facilitate its placement.”

Another beautiful enhancement was the planting of a large flowering garden at the southeast corner of the park. Purchase of the plants were funded by the Friends group but carefully selected by members of the award-winning Lewes in Bloom, and chosen specifically to attract butterflies. Members of Lewes in Bloom worked tirelessly to plant the new garden and continue to tend it, among others in the park.

Sydney said, “The efforts of Lewes in Bloom result in beautiful gardens throughout town and we are grateful that they include Canalfront Park among their many tended gardens. Their vision, the hard work of all their volunteers and maintenance of these gardens are appreciated by all the Friends of Lewes Canalfront Park.”

These projects embody the spirit of Lewes Canalfront Park. The three-acre park on the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal exists and thrives because of past and ongoing support of individual citizens, businesses and foundations. Funds were raised to preserve the land as a public park which had been considered for retail and residential development. The Friends of the Lewes Canalfront Park, under the umbrella of the Greater Lewes Foundation, support the programs, events and improvements in the park. The City of Lewes provides maintenance, and citizens volunteer time. Fundraising continues in support of 2107 events and capital improvements. The Friends organization welcomes new members and volunteers.
