New Kona Ice business bringing tropical treats to Sussex County

Hawaiian-style shaved ice available in plenty of flavor options
August 21, 2025

A new Kona Ice business launched for its first season in April, offering refreshing shaved ice treats from a self-serve mobile truck to Sussex County customers. Owners John and Meghan Nehrbas started the business to create fun opportunities for their family and to engage with the local community.

The truck features a variety of delicious flavors, including diet and sugar-free options, and rotating specials. Customers can customize their Hawaiian ice using the self-service Flavorwave station, allowing every individual to uniquely enjoy their sweet treat. The couple and their truck regularly appear at local events, organizations, schools, neighborhood gatherings and more sites throughout the county.

“We have Hawaiian-style shaved ice,” said John Nehrbas. “So we shave the ice, and then we have the Flavorwave, which has 10 flavors. And the customers can actually go out there and pick what flavors they want, in combination with as much juice as they want. We also have diet and sugar-free options in the truck as well. And we always come out with some kind of limited-time options.”

The Nehrbases feel it is very important to serve the local community, especially with Megan being a Lewes native. They appreciate that this business allows them to give back. Since opening, the Nehrbases have donated approximately $4,000 to local community organizations throughout Sussex County.

John said they hope to expand their event schedule and increase their community impact in coming years.

“The most rewarding part is getting to really work with my wife and kids in this business, getting that good family time together, and meeting all the wonderful community organizations,” said John.
