A new sign for Lewes posted during 1976 Bicentennial

March 7, 2018

Esthelda Parker-Selby brought in this clipping recently from a 1976 edition of The Whale newspaper.  “I thought it would be nice to share in light of February as Black History Month. My grandmother - Hilda Parker - led the effort that year to have a new welcome sign posted at Lewes’s Savannah Road entrance recognizing the city’s status as the first town in the first state.”

Parker was a member of the Lewes Bicentennial Committee and its efforts to help the nation celebrate the 200th anniversary of its founding.  Shown in the photo are (l-r) Craig Livering, Lewes Streets Department; Pat Quillen, sign maker;  Mayor All Stango; Hilda Parker; Lewes City Manager Ron Donovan; Parker’s son and Esthelda Parker-Selby’s father, Denver Parker; and Alfred Mitchell, Lewes Streets Department.
