Lewes African-American Heritage Commission meets Jan. 31
The Lewes African-American Heritage Commission will meet at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31, at city hall. The group will discuss the steps required to add signs honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to West Fourth Street. The commission will also discuss how to gather information to achieve other goals, such as research, oral histories, historical markers, and a walking tour and online app. For more information, call city hall at 302-645-7777.
Lewes historic preservation to meet Feb. 4
The Lewes Historic Preservation Architectural Review Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4, at city hall. The group will receive a presentation regarding local regulations pertaining to wireless towers and 5G systems. They will also consider a request for the demolition of the rear portion of the dwelling at 125 Jefferson Ave., a request for the removal of a wooden railing on the front porch at 511 Railroad Ave., a request to demolish an accessory structure and make renovations to the home at 11 Madison Ave., and a request for renovations to the home at 308 Pilottown Road. Sussex council meeting Tuesday, Feb. 4
Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda is a presentation by Kathy Kanefsky, Nemours chief development officer, and Lindsay Rhodenbaugh, Bayhealth Foundation president, on expansion in Sussex County. Rehoboth Boardwalk Committee to meet Feb. 3
The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and Beach committee has scheduled a meeting for 9 a.m., Monday, Feb. 3, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for discussion on next year’s proposed budget and how it affects committee priorities, a discussion on the color scheme for Boardwalk recycling bins and a discussion on who should represent the group if a working group is formed related to Lake Gerar improvements.

Henlopen TID workshop set Feb. 5
The Delaware Department of Transportation, in conjunction with Sussex County officials, has scheduled a workshop from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Lewes Fire Station 2, 32198 Janice Road, Lewes, to review and comment on the proposed Henlopen Transportation Improvement District.
The purpose of the district is to secure required transportation improvements to support planned future land use within the district area, which covers 24 square miles with 66 miles of roads and 62 intersections. Major roads in the district include sections of Route 24 and Route 9, and sections or all of Robinsonville, Plantation, Mulberry Knoll, Cedar Grove, Angola, Dorman, Jolyns Way, Webb’s Landing, Jimtown, Beaver Dam, Kendale, Wil King, Conley’s Chapel, Hollymount and Camp Arrowhead roads. Sussex council awards nonprofit grants
Sussex County Council presented the following councilmanic grants during its Jan. 28 meeting: $500 to Eastern Shore AFRAM Festival for its Martin Luther King Day Celebration; $2,000 to Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce for July 4th Stars & Stripes Celebration; and $1,500 to Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation for a teacher grant program.
League of Women Voters to celebrate 100th birthday
The League of Women Voters of Delaware will host a celebration of the league’s 100th birthday Friday, Feb. 14, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society Museum, 511 Rehoboth Ave. in Rehoboth Beach. Featured speaker Dr. Cynthia Newton, chair of the Political Science Department at Wesley College, will present From Civil Disobedience to the Ballot Box, setting the stage for the league’s centennial theme, Women Power the Vote. The league was founded by suffrage leaders in 1920, the same year that the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. During the past decade, leagues have registered voters, informed their communities on the issues, advocated in their legislatures, and helped shape their communities as well as the country.

SDARJ to meet Feb. 11 in Lewes
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will present Finding Our Voice: Songs of Struggle and Inspiration at its Town Hall meeting Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., at the Trinity Faith Christian Center, 15516 New Road in Lewes.
The audience will learn the history of great songs and records that inspired the movement for freedom and liberation, join in singing these classic anthems, and enjoy music provided by Christy Taylor and the Empowered Cultural Heritage Orchestra and singers. SDARJ welcomes everyone to join in exploring music that influenced and sustains the centuries-long journey toward racial justice.

DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan elected chair of ITS America
Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Jennifer Cohan was recently elected to serve as chair of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to serve as chair for the next year and showcase all that we are doing in Delaware to prepare our transportation system for the future, including the deployment of our first two autonomous shuttles in 2020,” said Cohan. “Utilizing technology to make our roads safer and ensuring mobility as a right for every person are two important issues that I intend to focus on with the membership of ITS America.”
Cohan will be chair as ITS America hosts the 2020 ITS World Congress in October 2020. This event will bring 10,000 transportation experts from around the world to Los Angeles to discuss The New Age of Mobility with a focus on seamless mobility in an increasingly complex world. The Intelligent Transportation Society of America advances the research and deployment of intelligent transportation technologies to save lives, improve mobility, promote sustainability, and increase efficiency and productivity.
