SPCA sets sneak peek at Rescue & Rehab
The Brandywine Valley SPCA will hold an open house Sunday, Sept. 9, at the BVSPCA Rescue & Rehab Center, 19022 Shingle Point Road, Georgetown. Tours start at 11 a.m., with a noon presentation of lifesaving plans. The speaker will be Adam Lamb, chief executive officer, Brandywine Valley SPCA.

Community members are invited to preview the facility that will become the new BVSPCA Rescue & Rehab Center. The center will help animals needing more help to get to adoption, such as cruelty victims, dogs needing behavior modification, newborn and infant kittens, pets at risk in other shelters, and emergency response cases.  The 11,500-square-foot facility sits on 13 acres on Shingle Point Road and formerly served as the Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary. The property had been empty since 2013, and the BVSPCA secured it at auction June 9. Repairs and renovations have begun, and the center is expected to open early next year.

Rehoboth personnel committee to meet
The Rehoboth Beach Personnel Committee has scheduled a meeting for 8 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for a discussion on the implementation process for compensation study recommendations and a review of the draft city manager performance evaluation process. Rehoboth board workshop set Sept. 11
The Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners has scheduled a workshop for 9 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for discussions on greyhounds in the convention center, an amendment to the charter relating to the lodging tax and an ordinance related to special events. End near for Rehoboth’s 2018 restrictions
Labor Day has passed, which means parking restrictions in Rehoboth will soon be lifted. The meters run through 11:59 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16. The no left turns and no turn on red regulations are in effect through 11:59 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 30. The no parking midnight to 6 a.m. regulation on Prospect Street, Queen Street and East Lake Drive is in effect through 6 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 30. The no pets on beach and boardwalk regulation runs through 11:59 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 30. Weather permitting, all signage will be removed by 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 1.

Emergency planning seminar set in Lewes
An event titled Ready or Not? Emergency Planning for Older Adults and Individuals with Disabilities will take place Friday, Sept. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lewes Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. The free, interactive workshop is aimed at helping seniors and disabled individuals assess their emergency planning needs and expand their support network. It will provide an overview of emergency planning best practices, allow participants to complete an individualized assessment of their needs, and connect them to experts, resources, and tools that will help improve their preparedness for weather emergencies and other hazards. Families and caretakers are welcome to attend and learn from the experts.

Registration is required because space is limited. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. and there will be presentations, exhibits, interactive sessions and a light breakfast served. The event is sponsored by Delaware Sea Grant and the City of Lewes in partnership with the Greater Lewes Community Village, University of Delaware Institute for Public Administration, Lewes Board of Public Works, Delaware Emergency Management Agency, Citizen Corps, Beebe Healthcare, Delaware Health & Social Services, Brandywine Valley SPCA, Sustainable Coastal Communities Initiative, and Sussex County. Lewes council meets Sept. 10
Lewes Mayor and City Council will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10, at city hall. Council will handle unfinished business items, including approval of amendments to city code to correct inconsistencies and adoption of the Sussex County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. Officials will set public hearings for annexation of property on New Road and property on Savannah Road. They will also consider a minor subdivision of property at 109 Oregon Ave. into two lots. Council will consider authorizing staff to apply for a grant to rehab the tennis courts at Canalfront Park. Officials will discuss a revitalization plan for the railroad right of way within the boundaries of Lewes and consider a recommendation to send a letter to businesses encouraging reduction of plastic material use. Wescoats Road to close starting Sept. 10
Wescoats Road in Lewes will be closed between Route 1 and Marsh Road for emergency sewer work by Sussex County from 8 a.m., Monday, Sept. 10, until 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14. Detour signs will be posted. A 60-foot section of pipe will need to be replaced to repair a leak, according to county engineer Hans Medlarz. “It manifested itself in a sinkhole, which we have under observation,” he said.

Sussex County Council meeting Sept. 11
Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda are discussion to clarify short-term, special events as permitted uses, and a board of adjustment appointment. At 10:30 a.m., council will have a public hearing on a proposed amendment to the forested and/or landscaped buffer ordinance. At 1:30, council will hold a public hearing on an application filed by Beebe Healthcare to rezone a 20-acre parcel along Warrington Road from AR-1, agricultural-residential, to I-1, institutional district. 36th RD Democrats to meet Sept. 17
Registered Democrats living in the 36th Representative District are encouraged to attend the September meeting of the 36th Democratic RD to be held at Arena’s Restaurant in Milford Monday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m. Committees will report on fundraising, outreach efforts and current legislative issues. Jim Purcell, candidate for the 18th Senatorial District, will discuss strategies to win, and plans for the Oct. 8 Candidates Forum at Slaughter Neck Community Center will be discussed.

Sussex Democrat Jamboree set Sept. 15
Sussex Delaware Democrats will hold their annual beach BBQ fundraiser Jamboree Saturday, Sept. 15, at Cape Henlopen State Park Main Pavilion. Starting time is 2 p.m. The 2018 Jamboree theme is Democrats Working Together. The Jamboree event is also the official kickoff of the 2018 election for local Sussex County Democrat candidates Jane Hovington, Sussex County Democratic chairwoman, said, “In addition to the Sussex County candidates, all Delaware’s congressional and Senate representatives along with Gov. Massey’s Ditch project meeting set Sept. 17
DNREC’s Shoreline & Waterway Management Section will hold an informational open house 6 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17, to discuss the upcoming Massey’s Ditch maintenance dredging project. The public meeting will be held at the South Coastal Library, 43 Kent Ave., Bethany Beach.
Topics will be current shoaling issues at Massey’s Ditch and the need for maintenance dredging; the beneficial reuse of the dredged material for beach nourishment on the north side of Indian River Inlet, and a general overview of sediment management in the Indian River Inlet system.
