Food Bank sets candidates forum Oct. 10
The Food Bank of Delaware presents Food for Thought - a conversation with those running for election on the state level - about food insecurity and nutrition in Delaware. The forum is free and open to the public. It will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Food Bank’s Milford branch at 1040 Mattlind Way. The event will provide an opportunity for local residents to learn more about what candidates would do to solve the issues of hunger and food insecurity throughout Delaware. Guests will have the opportunity to both ask questions in a panel-style discussion and hold one-on-one conversations with the candidates.

Candidates who have indicated they will participate include: Robin Hayes,  Republican,  29th Representative District; Colin Bonini, Republican, 16th Senate District; Dave Wilson, Republican, 18th Senate District; Don Allan, Democrat, 36th Representative District; Chuck Groce, Democrat, 30th Representative District; and Cheryl Precourt, Republican, 32nd Representative District. District 20 candidates forum set Oct. 10
Candidates for state Representative District 20 Republican Stephen Smyk, Democrat John Bucchioni and Libertarian Harry Smouse will square off at a public forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Sussex County Wednesday, Oct. 10, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Milton Public Library, 121 Union St. Following brief opening statements by the candidates, the entire forum will be devoted to written questions from the floor. The audience can pick up notecards and pencils for posing questions at the entry door or from monitors in the aisles throughout the program.

Incumbent Smyk and challengers Bucchioni and Smouse have been asked to post background information and their answers to questions on key issues on VOTE411.org, the League of Women Voters’ online voters’ guide. The VOTE411 system covers all the 2018 statewide and county-level races in the Nov. 6 general elections. The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 election is Oct. 13. Annual 911 Awareness Day set for Oct. 11
The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center will host its 19th annual 911 Awareness Day, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, at the public safety complex, 21911 Rudder Lane, near Georgetown. This year’s event will feature a day of safety demonstrations and emergency vehicles on display, from police K-9s to fire trucks, EMS units to police units. The event is free and open to the public. The event is held each year to give the public a better understanding of how the 911 center operates, as well as give citizens a glimpse into how police, firefighters, medical personnel and emergency dispatchers work each day to save lives.

In addition to tours of the 911 center, displays and activities will include the Delaware State Police K-9 team, Blades Fire Company safety house, Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office, Delaware State Fire School, Delaware Emergency Management Agency, and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. There will be more than a dozen first-responder vehicles on display. The event is sponsored by Sussex County and the Delaware State Police, which jointly operate the 911 center. Rehoboth Beach commissioners to meet Oct. 9
The Rehoboth commissioners have scheduled a workshop for 9 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for an update on live streaming meetings, a presentation by AT&T regarding additional cellphone antennas, a discussion of times for commissioners’ meetings and more discussion on charter changes related to voting. Rehoboth to vote on paving contract Oct. 9
The Rehoboth commissioners have scheduled a special meeting for 9 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave., to award a contract for the city’s street paving program. Repairs to Cape Henlopen pier to begin
Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 9, a pipe below the Cape Henlopen fishing pier will be replaced. According to an Oct. 3 announcement from the Division of Parks and Recreation, the pier will remain open for the duration of the project, expected to take three days, weather permitting. Sussex P&Z meeting is Thursday, Oct. 11
Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda are possible votes on an amended density calculation ordinance and the Anchors Run – Insight Development Co. LLC subdivision application. Among the five scheduled public hearings is a conditional-use application filed by Jose Carillo for an indoor/outdoor soccer facility on a 10-acre parcel at 19008 Speed St., Lincoln. Milton preservation committee to meet Oct. 9
Milton Historic Preservation Committee will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Milton library to discuss one case. Mex Dement, owner of 202 Chestnut St., is coming before the committee regarding the placement of an HVAC unit on the property.

Milton Water Committee to meet Oct. 10
Milton Water Committee will meet at 2 p.m., Wednesday Oct. 10, at Milton library to discuss the progress of ongoing town water projects. Those projects include the Wagamon’s West Shores water main and the new well and treatment facility near Shipbuilder’s Village. The committee will discuss funding for and the status of a U.S. Department of Agriculture planning grant for water infrastructure improvements in the area of Atlantic Avenue and Chestnut Street.

Density hearing on Sussex council agenda Oct. 9
Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda is a 10:30 a.m. public hearing on a code amendment on the calculation of subdivision density. See a complete agenda at www.sussexcountyde.gov.

Lewes city hall, BPW closed Oct. 8
Lewes City Hall and the offices of the Lewes Board of Public Works will be closed Monday, Oct. 8, in observance of the Columbus Day holiday. Offices will reopen with regular hours Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Lewes annexation public hearings set Oct. 9
Lewes Mayor and City Council will hold several public hearings Tuesday, Oct. 9. At 5 p.m., council will conduct hearings on the annexation requests for the Brittingham property on New Road and the Newsham property on Savannah Road. The 34.64-acre Brittingham property is being eyed for development for 90 townhouses. The developer is seeking to annex under the city’s new annexation zone. The Newsham property is only 0.8 acres and is adjacent to the Beebe property, which was rezoned to R-5, mixed residential, earlier this year. At 6 p.m., council will hold public hearings on several changes to city code, including the definition of minor subdivision, off-street parking standards, definition of attached dwelling, new requirements for attached dwellings in R-5 and limited commercial zones, and definition of multiple-family townhouse. Henlopen Acres town hall closed Oct. 8
In observance of Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 8, Henlopen Acres Town Hall, 104 Tidewaters, will be closed. Regular hours will resume Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Rehoboth city hall closed Oct. 8
In observance of Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 8, Rehoboth Beach City Hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave., will be closed. There will not be trash pickup that day. Education priorities SDARJ topic Oct. 9
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will hold a Town Hall Forum on Education Priorities and Issues in Sussex County.
The forum will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Trinity Faith Christian Center (Heritage Hall), 15516 New Road, Lewes.
A panel consisting of three district superintendents, Robert Fulton, Cape Henlopen School District; Stephen Guthrie, Sussex Technical District; and Mark Steele, Indian River School District, will speak and respond to questions from the audience.
