Veterans walk to raise support, awareness

Legislative Mall in Dover will be the gathering spot at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 12, when veterans from Delaware and beyond will join retired U.S. Air Force MSgt Bernadette Meehl from Magnolia to take part in a Suicide Walk for Veterans to raise awareness and support.

Meehl and fellow veterans from multiple states and branches of service are participating in a series of 2.2-mile walks in 22 states in 22 days that began on 2-2-22. The number 22 refers to the number of veteran suicides daily in the United States.

The walks are part of WalkForVets.org (formerly Buddy Watch Walk), an organization that works to bridge the gap between the civilian and military worlds, and raise awareness of veterans' mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, homelessness, unemployment, addiction and suicide.
