Rehoboth shade tree commission to meet

The Rehoboth Beach Parks and Shade Tree Commission will hold a special meeting online at 10 a.m., Monday, June 14. The agenda calls for continued discussion on recommendations to the city’s tree code. People wishing to speak must preregister by emailing City Secretary Ann Womack, awomack@cityofrehoboth.com, at least 24 hours prior to the meeting.

Sussex County Council meeting June 15

Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 15, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. 

Included on the agenda are presentations by Tyler Technologies on the county reassessment project and Bayhealth Foundation representatives on the Graduate Medical Education Program. Council is also expected to vote on a rezoning application filed by CP Townhomes LLC (Canal Pointe) that would allow for an amendment to construct a kayak-canoe launch along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

Lewes Mayor and City Council meets June 14

Lewes Mayor and City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 14. 

Officials will consider a memorandum of understanding with the Lewes Board of Public Works to resolve the lengthy conflict between the two groups. BPW directors will consider the same MOU the next morning. 

Council will recognize June 19 as Juneteenth and receive a presentation on its significance from the Rev. Dr. Deborah McCaffity. 

Council will consider action on a site plan for the new Lewes Middle School off Savannah Road, Sussex Drive and DuPont Avenue; consider a rezoning request for 660 Pilottown Road, formerly Lewes Dairy, from industrial to R-2, low-density residential; and possibly act on moving forward with a wayfinding signage plan. 

Later in the agenda, council will discuss a plan to resume in-person meetings. 

Council will consider several recommendations from the bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee; they include engaging DelDOT in a planning process to add bicycle lanes to Cedar Street, converting a parking space in the city’s Third Street lot to bicycle parking with a rack, and adding a crosswalk at New Road and Forecastle Lane.

Lewes BPW to vote to end dispute June 15

Lewes Board of Public Works has scheduled a meeting for 9 a.m., Tuesday, June 15, with the purpose of voting to end the lengthy dispute with the City of Lewes. 

The meeting is set to open with an executive session, then return to open session to vote on a memorandum of understanding with Lewes Mayor and City Council and a proposed revision to BPW’s charter. 

BPW directors will also discuss the approach to fill the upcoming general manager vacancy after Darrin Gordon announced he would be leaving near the end of July. 

RD20 Democratic Committee to meet 

The Delaware 20th Representative District Democratic Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 17, via Zoom. 

Delaware Department of Finance Secretary Rick Geisenberger will discuss the state’s budget process and the proposals currently before the General Assembly for approval. Geisenberger supports Gov. John Carney’s key administrative initiatives including boosting state financial reserves and ensuring sustainable budget growth. 

Any registered Delaware Democrat is welcome to participate in RD20’s committee meeting, but non-committee members must register by emailing rd20.deldems@gmail.com and including their legal name and street address for verification purposes.

DelDOT expanding Georgetown facility

At its May 27 meeting, Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission approved a final site plan for an expansion to the existing Delaware Department of Transportation administration building at the intersection of Route 113 and South Bedford Street near Georgetown.

The 6,650-square-foot expansion will be connected to the existing 14,300-square-foot building. 

The plan calls for 48 new parking spaces and crosswalks.
