Ninth annual backpack giveaway gets kids ready for school
As part of the ninth annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway, TCC and Wireless Zone stores across the country, including in Sussex County, donated backpacks full of school supplies to children Aug. 1.
Since 2013, TCC has donated 1.2 million backpacks filled with supplies to students nationwide to ensure children are well prepared for the start of the school year. This year 140,000 backpacks were donated. Backpacks came filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, a ruler, folders and glue.
There were three participating locations in Sussex County – Georgetown, Millsboro and Rehoboth.
Rehoboth store employee Heather Holston came in on her day off to help distribute the backpacks. Rubbing her thumb and pointer fingers together to illustrate her point, she said there was a time in her life when she didn’t have two nickels, and this program was the only way for her daughter to have a backpack for school.
“It’s a humbling experience. It’s a good program,” she said, adding that all the bags not distributed during the event will be donated to local schools.
TCC also presented three students with $10,000 college scholarships. For more information on the program, go to tccrocks.com.
