Norman A. Barthelson, Astra Zeneca retiree
Norman A. Barthelson, 88, of Lewes, passed away Monday, July 24, 2017, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. He was born Monday, Dec. 17, 1928, in Teaneck, N.J., son of the late Albin and Isabelle Barthelson.
Norman graduated from Teaneck High School and received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware in 1952. After graduation, Norman worked for a few years for Hercules Powder Company in Wilmington before joining Atlas Powder Company, also in Wilmington. Atlas Powder Company changed its name to ICI Americas and later to Astra Zeneca. Norman held various positions with the company and traveled extensively, until his retirement in 1990.
After his retirement, Norman and his wife Anita built a second home in Lewes, retaining their permanent home in Kennett Square, Pa. In 1998 they decided to make Lewes their pemanent residence, and built a home on the Delaware Bay, next to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. They spent 17 wonderful years there, and had many wonderful memories of special occasions spent with family and friends. Norman was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
Norman is survived by his beloved wife, Anita Parry Barthelson of Lewes; his sons: Stephen Barthelson of Downers Grove, Ill., Roger Barthelson and his wife Judy of Tucson, Ariz., and Peter Barthelson and his wife Elaheh of McLean, Va.; his daughter, Melissa Barthelson Miller and her husband Gary of Orlando, Fla.; his stepdaughter, Lisa Parry Ruth and her husband David of Annapolis, Md.; his 11 grandchildren; his three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Karen Anderson and her husband James of Cushing, Maine.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 28, at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
