In light of Fredman's coverage of the Dave Reynolds Biathlon, I would like to congratulate Seashore Striders for providing watermelon to the contestants. I guarded with Dave several decades ago. Super guy and a great lifeguard. Nolo Secundus, for sure.
Over the decades, I've enjoyed the second-greatest high life has to offer, and that's the high one feels after conquering an athletic endeavor.
I used to run miles on the beach during my lunch breaks with another beach legend, Pirate Pete Hartsock, Rehoboth Beach Patrol lieutenant, Rookie of the Year, captain and commander of the U.S. Public Health Service, and right-hand man of Surgeon General Charles Everett Koop, a noted pediatric surgeon.
When Pete and I ran, we capped our runs with his famous iced tea and crackers since we had just run out our lunch breaks.
But after that, we pirates started 5K races all around Dewey Beach with a pirate cannon, dressed in pirate attire, flying a pirate flag or a star-spangled banner purloined from Fort McHenry, and finished them by slicing up watermelons with a cutlass or a saber and providing them to children.
There is nothing better for a body after a race. Adults got beer and junk food from the sponsors, but Pete and I would purloin watermelons from pig farmer McSwill's patch, or from Sussex County Councilman Vance Philips. Thanks, Vance.
In any case, many thanks to Seashore Striders for providing watermelon to the participants of the Dave Reynolds Biathlon.
