Oak Orchard boys and girls compete in Pitch, Hit and Run Competition

May 30, 2017

Despite the grayness of the day April 22, the 15 youngsters of the Oak Orchard Boys & Girls Club came ready to compete in the second Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run Competition, sponsored by the Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club, on the grounds of American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro.

The MLB annually works with local organizations to offer a free one-day event for boys and girls ages 7-14. The Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club partnered with the Oak Orchard Boys & Girls Club to bring this MLB program to the children attending the club. Youngsters competed in pitching, hitting and running competitions in four age groups: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14.

Long Neck Rotary and Oak Orchard Boys & Girls Club volunteers manned the three competitive stations, and children rotated through all three, achieving points based on their performance. Those with the highest points were the winners in their categories. The one-day competition included a cookout for the children and their families, and an awards ceremony for winners in the All Around, Hitting, Pitting and Running age groups. Competitors also received commemorative T-shirts. Those winning awards were eligible to advance to the sectional competition May 21 at the Wilmington Blue Rocks Stadium in Wilmington. In softball, those eligible were: Andrew Supplee, Kiera Supplee and Amoura White. In baseball, those eligible were: Caleb Creekmore, Nathan Potter, Ryan Parker, Jeremiah Creekmore, Damari Snead, Israel Creekmore and Sychar Creekmore.

“We are thrilled to be able to continue to offer this project to the Oak Orchard Boys & Girls Club. We can give the children exposure to athletic competition that they might normally miss, and provide positive reinforcement for their activity no matter what their skill set,” said Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club President Judy Hall.

“We are so happy to have the continued support of the Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club,” said Oak Orchard Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Millie Charnick. “Not only do they donate funds for our programs, they continue to find ways to benefit the children such as this competition.”

The Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club meets weekly at 7:30 a.m. every Tuesday for breakfast at the Ocean Grill II on Long Neck Road. Visitors and prospective members are always welcome. Go to www.longnecksunriserotaryclub.com for more information.
