Oil spill closes beaches in Dewey

October 23, 2020

Beaches in Dewey are closed until further notice due to the discovery of coagulated tar balls on the beach, Mayor Dale Cooke said in an alert sent to residents.

Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has been notified and will work on cleaning the beach along with those in other coastal towns affected by the oil spill in the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

Cooke said there is currently little verifiable information as to the source of the spill.

The spill was first reported on Lewes and Broadkill beaches Oct. 19.
