Beverly Mears says she always wanted to run her own home for the elderly. With the opening of Paradise Senior Living, near Georgetown, that dream has come true.
Mears, a Seaford native, is a registered nurse who has worked in long-term elder care for 20 years at Genesis Healthcare facilities in Seaford, Salisbury, Md., and Milford. She is currently director of nursing at Loftland Park Center in Seaford.
“I see the residents as family,” she said. “They are the equivalent of my grandparents, aunts or uncles. I try to make each day special for them, and remind them how amazing they are.” Mears said her interest in caregiving started early. “When I was a little girl, I helped care for my grandmother, who lived with my family,” she said. “I took on responsibilities and took an active role in her caregiving.” From a young age her parents predicted she would become a nurse.
For years, she searched for a location that would allow her to open her own home for elderly clients. “I was taught that if you treat people right and do the right thing, things work out,” she said. Her patience paid off. Her husband, Rodney, saw the chance to open an elder care home when his father, James Brooks Mears, passed away. They bought his home and spent four years renovating it.
Paradise Senior Living is a welcoming, one-story home on Paradise Road, outside Georgetown, a road named by Rodney's dad. Designed as a long-term assisted living care facility, the space can also serve as a respite care center where caregivers can take a short break.
The facility provides housekeeping, home-style dining, laundry service, personal care, medication assistance and activities. A live-in caregiver provides companionship and care and is on-site 24 hours a day. In addition, a nurse is on-call 24 hours a day. Services such as transportation, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy can be scheduled using outside companies.
With three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and common areas such as a dining room, living room, enclosed porch and a fenced back yard, the facility can accept up to three residents. The facility also has cable and WiFi.
