The recent Peach Festival at Milton Farmers Market brought larger-than-usual crowds to Dogfish Head Brewery despite higher-than usual temperatures. Farmers market volunteer Nancy Isabell said overall, the festival was a resounding success.
“People are selling out of their merchandise, and we’ve had good feedback,” Isabell said.
At the stand set up for Nassau-based Old World Breads, owner Keith Irwin said his peach pies, cakes and croissants moved fast. “It’s been busier than usual and we had great crowds today,” Irwin said. “The entire peach table was gone in the first hour.”
Fresh-picked peaches from local farms like TS Smith and Sons looked full and juicy athough a late-spring frost put a damper on the peach season for many local farmers. Despite losing her peaches this year, farmer Lenore Brady from the Georgetown-based Stag Run Farm said she has sour and sweet cherry trees producing right now and nearly 5,000 apple trees that will be coming into season soon.
“We have peach trees, but the frost hit us really bad,” Brady said. “Our apples are looking good, and they are coming in August.”
