The Peninsula Gallery in Lewes welcomes back recurring exhibitor Jim Rehak as its September featured artist.
An avid plein air oil painter, Rehak uses the seasonal changes of the Delmarva Peninsula and vicinity as inspiration for his landscape art. His work takes him outside to paint fields, marshes, farms, rivers and bays, allowing him to get in touch with his subjects directly. Inspired by the Impressionists and their contemporaries, Rehak focuses heavily on the use of light, freely interpreting light through vibrant color.
“The strength of a painting is often fueled by direct observation. By communicating a powerful sense of light, I attempt to evoke memories of experiencing the landscape,” said Rehak.
His interest in art started with comic book illustrations at an early age. While studying for his BFA at the Maryland Institute of Art, Rehak’s passion for oil painting emerged. Art has always been a vocation for Rehak; he has worked as a portrait and caricature artist in Ocean City during college, an art director at a sign company, a teacher and a freelance court illustrator. He has won Best in Show awards at the Rehoboth Art League, Art League of Ocean City and Chesapeake College, among others. Rehak participates in paint-outs and competitions, as well as being represented by various fine art galleries. He is a member of the Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association.
A selection of Jim Rehak’s landscapes is on display throughout the month of September. To view works online, go to peninsula-gallery.com.
