Like many events leading up to the holiday season, the Peninsula Gallery’s annual “Small Jewels” show has become something of a tradition for collectors of miniature works of art, as well as those who like to give art at this time of year.
Although some of the work does not meet the strict criteria for "miniature," all the images are 8-by-10 or smaller. This year there are 12 artists participating. Returning are perennial local favorites like Julie Molyneux, Steve Rogers, Nick Serratore and Karin Snoots. Both Molyneux and Serratore have taken a different approach to the exhibit this year, with Serratore in particular changing mediums and doing figurative work instead of landscapes.
New to the gallery this year are Meg Walsh from Arlington, Va., with her plein aire landscapes in oil; Dean Shelton from Fairview, Tenn., another plein aire painter; and John Davis Held from Baltimore, who is know for his luminous skies that convey a sense of light and peace.
Intricate works in fiber are included by Betsey VonDreele and Pat Staby, while the BioMorphic art of Raymond Petersen is also featured. His six-by-six abstracts with a botanical bias are luscious in both color and thickness of paint. Making up the 12 are Al Barker, a true miniaturist from New Jersey, and Bill Snow from Rehoboth, well known for his application of old master oil painting techniques to contemporary realism, particularly architectural renderings and landscapes.
There will be a reception to meet some of the artists from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov 26, and the exhibit will continue until Dec 30. Images may be previewed at www.peninsula-gallery.com. The gallery is located at 520 E. Savannah Road in Lewes, just over the canal bridge, and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 302-645-0551 for additional information.
