Peninsula ladies resurrect butterfly garden

Two-year labor of love has developed into a community oasis
August 24, 2021

A group of ladies who live in The Peninsula community have resurrected a plot of land overrun by weeds and transformed it into a beautiful butterfly garden of native plants and flowers attracting bees and butterflies.

Not far from the community clubhouse, the garden is located adjacent to the golf course and next to one of the many trails crisscrossing The Peninsula.

The Peninsula is situated on 800 acres along Indian River Bay near the end of Bay Farm Road in Long Neck.

Kimberly Plum, one of the organizers of the effort, said the project has been a labor of love funded by donations from residents and a few businesses. The land was originally a butterfly garden when the community opened in 2007, but it was not maintained.

She said two years ago, a few residents started to redo the garden. “And little by little, more people joined us,” she said. “It's become an oasis.”

The garden consists of a paver walkway with several chairs and benches donated by residents in memory of loved ones. The committee plans to make the plot a four-season garden and add a gazebo.

Among the variety of annuals and perennials are milkweed, zinnias, roses, flowering tobacco, peonies, dill, thyme, coneflowers, black-eyed Susans and hyssop.
