Peter M. Zvalaren, retired letter carrier

May 22, 2023

Peter Michael Zvalaren, 76, of Lewes passed away peacefully at home Thursday, May 18, 2023. Peter was born June 2, 1946, in Passaic, N.J., to John and Anna (Knapik) Zvalaren.

A proud veteran, Peter answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, and bravely fought in the Vietnam War where he was wounded in combat. Following his honorable service, he was awarded the Purple Heart. After the military, his path would lead him to a career with the post office, working as a letter carrier and retiring after many dedicated years.

On Aug. 1, 1970, he married the love of his life, Barbara, and the two would spend the next 52 years creating a wonderful life together with countless happy memories. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed hanging out in the garage with his friends, a pastime that brought him great joy. He loved to fish and was able to do so often. Peter also took pleasure in bowling with his partner Barbara and planting all the plants she would buy. Peter loved a good bloody mary and was a high roller playing the penny slots. Above all, he treasured time spent with his family, especially his adored grandchildren who were the apples of his eye. Peter was nothing less than a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was loved by so many and will be forever missed.

Peter is survived by his wife, Barbara Zvalaren (Maskal) of Lewes; his daughters: Suzanne Zvalaren Schneider (Ryan) and Alisa Zvalaren Nordt (Byran); his grandchildren: Samantha Anne Schneider, Lucas Peter Schneider of Easton, Md., Charlotte Emily Nordt, Devlynn Lillith Nordt and Evan Conrad Nordt, all of Totowa, N.J.; and his beloved pets: Bailey, Snowy, Seahorse and Buffy.

He is preceded in death by his parents John and Anna Zvalaren; and his brother John Zvalaren Jr.

Chapel Committal Services with military honors will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, June 2, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
