Philip Morton Gallery to host Dane Tilghman art receptions Oct. 16, 17
For its annual event during the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival, Philip Morton Gallery will present a new exhibition of works by renowned artist Dane Tilghman. Jazz, Blues and Times to Remember will run Friday, Oct. 16 to Tuesday, Nov. 3. A two-night opening reception to meet the artist will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Born in 1957 in a little town called West Chester, Pa., about 25 miles outside of Philadelphia, Tilghman has become one of America’s most sought-after African-American artists of his time.
With over 30 works displayed, Tilghman brings a very exciting mix in style and subject matter to Rehoboth Beach and the jazz fest. He has taken his artwork towards new dimensions: going from realism to a stylish combination all his own of surrealism and primitive elongation.
Since 1979, he has exhibited his works throughout the United States at art festivals, galleries, trade shows and conventions where he has received numerous awards, including the Medal of Honor in Graphics from the American Artists Professional League. In 1999, a baseball image was accepted at the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame Museum. He completed a baseball mural for Turner Stadium in Atlanta as well as one for the Phillies for Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Tilghman also had a display of Negro League works at the former Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
His work has appeared in Sports Illustrated, Scholastic Books published by McGraw-Hill, the Western Journal of Black Studies Vol. 16 and on ESPN’s website. Tilghman’s work has appeared on TV shows such as “The Cosby Show” and “Roseanne” and has been collected by such notaries as Bill Cosby, Nelson Mandela, Nabisco, Prudential, Astra-Zeneca and the late Ossie Davis.
Articles have appeared on Tilghman in U.S. Art, Upscale and Black Parenting, and several other magazines. He has advertised in Black Enterprise, American Visions, Essence, Decor Magazine and Art Business News. Dane was also featured in the Four Seasons of Chester County, a publication that features the works of Chester County artists, by Red Hamer.
He has had his work on exhibit at the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum in Philadelphia and in one-man shows at Widener University, West Chester University, University of Pennsylvania and the Butler Institute of Fine Art in Youngstown, Ohio. He currently has licensing deals with Clarke American Check Corp., Bruce McGaw Graphics and Frontline Publishing.
Tilghman and his wife Rosalyn have been married for over 30 years and have two children, Lauren and Daniel. To see a preview of the show, an insightful video interview with Tilghman by WHYY’s “Delaware Tonight," go to Philip Morton Gallery’s Facebook page.
