The Phillies are in first place!

May 25, 2018

Baseball:

Shhhhh.

I don't want to say this too loud or boastful, but in case you haven't heard, the Philadelphia Phillies are in a tie for first place with the Atlanta Braves. The pitching rotation has been carrying the team for the past two weeks or so. The one area that still needs to see improvement is their defense. They are making way too many sloppy errors.

To begin this week, the Phillies won two out of three games against the Braves. This was an important series for the team early in the season. Their awful record from the past few years makes it tough for them to stay in the lead. They actually have one of the best records in the entire National League so far. Let's hope they can keep this up and keep the summer interesting.

Ice Hockey:

The Stanley Cup finals are about to begin between the Washington Capitals and the underdog team, the Las Vegas Golden Knights. The Capitals have a reputation for being the National Hockey Leagues most under-achieving team in the last 15 to 20 years. This year though, they are living up to their true potential and will make the Stanley Cup fun to watch.

That being said, I will be rooting for Las Vegas to win the championship. I think it would be an awesome story if an expansion team could win the Stanley Cup in their first year, for the first time ever, in any sport.

Horse Racing:

On Saturday, I watched Justify win the Preakness Stakes in a very close race. Like the Kentucky Derby, the weather was terrible, actually even worse. You could barely see anything because of the heavy fog and the track was like melted chocolate. I hold my breath when these races are run in such conditions and am actually glad when they are done and there are no injuries.

Hopefully the last race of the Triple Crown will be run in perfect weather. The third and final race is the Belmont Stakes. It will be a lot more exciting to watch with Justify going for the Triple Crown.

High School Playoffs:

The Delaware High School spring sports playoffs are in full swing and Cape is riding high. I am hoping for great results for all the Cape Henlopen teams. You have baseball, softball, lacrosse and girls soccer. The Cape girls lacrosse team is trying to extend their amazing streak of 9 straight state championships and win number 10! This is simply unbelievable! I won't be able to go to that game, but I hope to at least be in the stands watching the boys' lacrosse on Friday night. Go Cape!

See you on the sidelines!
