Play a little golf to help our homebound neighbors

September 5, 2019

I am honored to serve on the board of directors for Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth. Founded in 1970, this exclusively Sussex charity holds the distinction of being the first home-delivered meal program in the state of Delaware. And it’s still going strong today.

The daily meal delivery is an intricate ballet performed by office staff, cooks, packers and drivers – almost all of them volunteers. Most of the 125 drivers work 2 hours a week making a round trip of 25 to 40 miles to deliver 10 to 20 meals. Since 1995, Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth has delivered well over a million hot meals to deserving seniors. Several years ago, when Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth found itself without a food preparation facility, SoDel Concepts restaurant group stepped in to provide the creation, cooking and packaging of the daily meals in the huge commercial kitchen at Fish On in the Villages of Five Points. Every weekday morning the popular restaurant bustles with drivers, cooks, packers and organizers.

So what does all this have to do with Steppin’ up to the Plate? One of the longest-running charity events in Sussex County is the Harry Derrickson Memorial Golf Tournament. On Monday, September 16th, the 42nd annual extravaganza kicks off at Rehoboth Beach Country Club with a lunchtime registration followed by a shotgun start. An army of foursomes will spill out onto the course at RBCC to swing, drive and putt for Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth. Fees for the event are $175 per player and $650 for a foursome. It includes green fee, cart, a gift bag, beverages on the course (must stay hydrated!), lunch and an awards ceremony afterwards. The kicker? Every penny earned stays right here in Sussex County to help Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth step up to the plate for our local homebound seniors.

In many cases, Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth is the sole source of outside contact for the homebound. The system also contains healthcare costs by helping clients avoid institutionalized living. Be a part of this great service and join the fun on Monday, September 16th at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Tickets may be purchased by calling 302-645-7449 or online at www.MealsonWheels-LR.org.
