Police make arrests for Millsboro shooting spree
State police identified, located and arrested two men they believe are responsible for a shooting spree that occurred in Oak Orchard Friday, Nov. 6. Cpl. Walter Newton, state police spokesman, said police charged Joshua Callahan, 29, of Millsboro, and Lavell Cunningham, 23, of New Castle with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of robbery, multiple counts of weapon offenses, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, multiple counts of reckless endangering, conspiracy and criminal mischief.
Newton said that according to the police report, police received the initial 911 call from a residence in the 32000 block of Delaware Avenue, Oak Orchard, at approximately 12:13 a.m., for a possible burglary and shots fired. Troopers converged on the residence, and preliminary reports from the victim indicated an unknown black male approached the residence and asked for a person by name, who the homeowner was not familiar with. The suspect then fired two rounds through the front door and fled. No injuries were reported at this location.
Police received a second call at approximately 12:29 a.m., for shots fired in the area of the 32000 block of River Road, Oak Orchard. Witness reports indicated the shots were fired from a gold or tan minivan occupied by two individuals: one white male and one black male. No injuries were reported at this location.
The police report stated the third call to 911 was at approximately 12:36 a.m., from the Harris Teeter grocery store at 26370 Bay Farm Road, Millsboro, which is just a few miles from Oak Orchard.
That complaint was for a robbery and shooting. Witnesses said two people were approached by a white male and a black male traveling in a gold or tan minivan.
Witnesses said the black male suspect exited the vehicle and ordered two individuals to the ground. The suspect subsequently removed various articles of their property and fired one round, which struck one of the victims in the hand and torso area. The suspect vehicle then fled in an unknown direction.
The male victim who sustained injury was transported to Beebe Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries.
Troopers recovered evidence from the scene of the shooting that linked Callahan and Cunningham to the shootings, said Newton. Troopers stopped the pair on Route 1 near Route 24 outside of Rehoboth Beach at 2:30 p.m., later that day.
Callahan was committed to the Department of Correction in default of $213,500 cash bail, and Cunningham was committed in default of $564,000 cash bail.
