Pong Bros. cookout raises funds for the community

Variety of local groups benefit from annual event
August 8, 2025

The smell of chicken drifted across the drawbridge as far away as Second Street Aug. 2, drawing people to the Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary’s pavilion on Savannah Road in Lewes for the third annual Pong Bros. Community Fundraiser BBQ.

More than 400 chickens were cooked and 150 ears of corn boiled at this year’s event. All the funds raised, minus operating costs, went to the fire department, police department and local charities. This year’s charities included the mental health and substance abuse group run by Jan Fleming at Cape Henlopen High School, and a donation to the girls’ lacrosse boosters at Cape High in the name of Elissa Ruppert of Atlantic Lacrosse, who died this year.

“One of the things we wanted to teach our children was to do a day’s worth of work where you’re going to give it away,” said Jason Burris, the unofficial event coordinator. “You’re not going to get any benefit aside from helping somebody else.”

Donations are still being accepted via Venmo by sending them to @Taryn-Burris-1.
