Supporters of an offshore wind project for Delaware are greatly encouraged by a recent decision of the Sussex Economic Development Action Committee. SEDAC has released a statement that an offshore wind project for Delaware will not only provide emission-free power and guard against volatile fossil fuel prices, but that it will also “contribute substantially to local economic development.”
The SEDAC statement speaks glowingly of the “boundless” jobs that will result from offshore wind. They say that offshore wind also provides the opportunity to develop a U.S. manufacturing supply chain and to bring new manufacturing to the region, while boosting tax revenues. A peer-reviewed paper by Parkison and Kempton reinforces this claim in terms of the opportunities for marshaling port activity in the region.
Some of our legislators in Dover tell us that they would like to support an offshore wind project for Delaware, but they first want to make sure that coastal communities are on board. This statement by Sussex County’s own SEDAC demonstrates that business leaders in southern and coastal Delaware strongly support initiation of a Delaware offshore wind project.
POWER, People for Offshore Wind Energy Resources, a coalition of organizations that stand behind an offshore wind project for Delaware, echoes the conclusions of the SEDAC statement. SEDAC has studied the issue over several months, and they get it. They know that we have no time to waste in bringing clean energy at a stable price to our state, and simultaneously provide a much-needed economic driver.
