Prostate Cancer Bike Race and Health Fair set Sept. 13 in Dover
The Pedal Away Prostate Cancer Bike Race and Health Fair will start at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, at Eden Hill Medical Center in Dover. The family-friendly event offers something for everyone: the bike race, food, vendors, craft beers, a DJ, raffles and health information.
Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among adult males in Delaware. Delaware’s level of cancer incidence is significantly higher than the national average.
These facts are what inspired Rafael Zaragoza, MD, formerly of Urology Associates of Dover, to start an organization dedicated to raising awareness in the state. With a small group of like-minded community members including his son, Michael Zaragoza, MD, also of Urology Associates of Dover, Rafael Zaragoza founded the Delaware Prostate Cancer Coalition in 2011.
“We wanted to do something fun and different to get people talking about prostate cancer,” Rafael Zaragoza said. “Many of us have family or friends with prostate cancer. This event is a great way for people to show their support.”
Although the bike event started small, it’s now a popular event, attracting cyclists from more than six states. A men’s health fair follows the race, featuring speakers including prostate cancer survivors.
The race is open to cyclists of all abilities, with top finishers receiving prizes. There are separate start times for competitive and non-competitive cyclists. A picnic lunch comes after the race.
The annual event is sponsored by the Delaware Prostate Cancer Coalition and raises funds that support free community prostate screening programs and educational outreach.
