Race for the Ribbon brings out 330 runners

A field of 330 registered for the sixth Race for the Ribbon 5K held July 20 in Rehoboth Beach, which was produced by Team Shuttleworth and the Seashore Striders, raising more than $12,000 for the American Cancer Society and Greysen Hitchens of Georgetown. The event was in memory of Nancy L. Hendershot, mother of Stephanie Shuttleworth, who died of cancer in 2008.

The Greene Turtle Restaurant did an awesome job with the post-race breakfast for all the runners, while Team Shuttleworth put together a silent auction, which was a new addition to the event.

“We added the silent auction this year, and the community was so generous. Many items were donated for the event,” said Shuttleworth. “I can’t thank the Cape community, the volunteers and the participants enough for all the support they give to our event. It is just wonderful to see it come together.”

Amanda Rickert, 18, of Wilmington finished 12th to capture the female overall title in 19:29, while Meryl Ludwig, 47, of Mount Airy, Md., finished second in 21:26. Gina Noble, 41, won the female masters title in 22:07.

Joshua Forlds, 25, won the male overall title in 16:15, averaging 5:13 a clip, while Nick Rotz was a close second in 16:21. Brian Shepherd of Ligonier, Ind., grabbed the male masters title in 17:43.

Vincent Morris, 45, of Washington, D.C., won the Clydesdale title in 22:22, while Lauren Thomas, 51, of Rehoboth Beach won the filly title in 28:20.

Erin Bailey, 24, of Lewes won the 5K walk in 34:13.

YMCA 5 Miler

The 31st annual YMCA 5 Miler was held July 21 from Deauville Beach with just under 200 runners and walkers turning out for the event. Catcher’s Restaurant supplied the post-race pancake breakfast, while Giant Foods supplied the fruit. The event is the second qualifying 5-miler in the series and had to be completed if qualifiers missed the Masser 5 Miler in May.

Jared Tootell easily won the overall title in 28:23, while Georgetown’s Enos Benbow finished second in 28:45. Daniel Neiswender, 17, of Lebanon, Pa., rounded out the top three finishers in 28:47. Mike Sewell, 44, of Camden won the male masters in 30:20.

On the female side of the action, 20-year-old Joanna Baird of Lutherville, Md., ran 33:16 to win the overall title, while Meryl Ludwig of Mount Airy, Md., ran 36:03 to finish in the top three overall two days in a row.

The Sussex Family YMCA of Rehoboth Beach is the beneficiary of the event and supplies many course volunteers, water stop volunteers and post-race help.

Dam Mill 5K

A big event comes in the near future as the Dam Mill 5K will celebrate its 30th anniversary Saturday, Aug. 3, from Cupola Park in Millsboro. Register online by going to www.seashorestriders.com. The goal is to bring back as many Dam Mill Hall of Famers as we can, a gathering which began back in 2003. If you are a part of the Hall of Fame, please RSVP by emailing race director Tim Bamforth at tim@seashorestrider.com. The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. Arrive early, as parking is limited.

Kidz Triathlon

Devin Hundley and her brother Blake took part in the Kidz Triathlon in Columbia, Md., July 20 as Devin finished 14th overall and was the fifth female under 8 years old in a time of 17:34.3. Blake was the second 11-year-old on the longer course in 24:28. Congratulations to both Hundley athletes for following Dad’s footsteps into the tri world. Only one Hundley left - what’s up, Mom?
