Peace poles to be distributed in each county
Peace Week Delaware is celebrating 10 years of service to the state by donating up to 10 peace poles, which will be planted in all three counties.
Sussex County already has peace poles donated by PWD in Seaford, Georgetown, Bethany Beach, Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. These poles are placed in front of churches, community centers, synagogues and other sites.
According to the organization, peace poles do not belong to any faith tradition; they are there to proclaim “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in four languages. Each community recipient of an 8-foot-tall peace pole chooses the languages for their gift from a list of more than 80 languages. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the first peace pole planted in Hiroshima, Japan.
Community and religious organizations are invited to submit a request for a peace pole. Once a recipient is selected, PWD will provide the pole and assist in its planting this coming fall.
