May 5, 2022

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Love Creek Elementary students Amara Mills and Amaiya Person for their leadership, improvement, effort and excellence.

By displaying leadership, improvement, effort and excellence, Mills embodies all attributes of the award. A new student this year, Mills has persevered to communicate her needs while navigating making new friends. Exhibiting kindness and encouragement for others, she is an inspiration to classmates by showing how successful a new situation can be.

Person is a Spanish immersion student who displays great leadership qualities inside and outside the classroom. Her drive to learn and inspire others are examples of the amazing qualities she demonstrates at school every day.

Each student received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and the book, “The Highest Tribute: Thurgood Marshall’s Life, Leadership, and Legacy,” by Kekla Magoon. SDARJ contributes $15 to each gift card, and Browseabout contributes $5.

SDARJ’s education committee initiated the award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, effort and excellence in their schools. Two students from each school in the Cape Henlopen School District will be recognized. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity.
