March 21, 2022

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Milton Elementary students Alyla Johnson and Olivia McClain for their demonstration of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence.

Teachers say second-grader Alyla Johnson is kind to everyone. She always tries her best and encourages others to be their best. Alyla puts first things first and synergies with all her classmates. She has a wonderful attitude toward learning, and teachers look forward to seeing her every day.

Fifth-grader Olivia McClain is a great leader who serves on the fifth-grade Lighthouse Team, which is similar to a student council. Teachers say she is organized and a hard worker.

Each student received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and a book about Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court justice.

SDARJ’s education committee initiated the award to recognize students in the Cape district who represent ideals of leadership, effort and excellence in their schools. A nonpartisan organization, SDARJ educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity. For more information, go to sdarj.org.
