January 27, 2023

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Milton Elementary students Isabella Colon and Avaiya Hazzard for their leadership, improvement, effort and excellence. Isabella is in second grade, while Avaiya is in fifth.

Isabella Colon’s teacher said she selected her for this award because of her leadership in the classroom. Further, she said Isabella is “a great role model to all students; she follows the Leader Habits and strives for the best. Isabella has insightful thoughts to share during classroom discussions and is ready to help her classmates when needed. She is so wise for her age, and I can always rely on her.”

Avaiya Hazzard was recognized by her teacher as an exceptional student. Her teacher also said Avaiya “is eager to learn and consistently puts forth her best effort. She radiates positive energy, always has a smile, and demonstrates kindness to her classmates and teachers. Avaiya is a great role model for the kindergartners she mentors and is an outstanding member of our school community.”

The students received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and a book about Thurgood Marshall. Browseabout is a sponsor of the award.

SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence in their schools. Two students from each school in the Cape Henlopen School District are recognized throughout the school year. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity. For more information, go to sdarj.org.
