Receiving tax refund is monumental task

I am writing to describe the terrible treatment I’m getting from the Delaware tax office. I can’t be the only person being harmed by them.

I made less than $30,000. I paid $1,089 in Delaware taxes, and I’m entitled to a refund. It’s been five months, and they keep coming up with new problems.

Delaware received my paper tax forms March 21. I called to inquire about my refund July 20, and I was told me there was a problem. I was not informed of the problem. Delaware was not going to tell me. It was fixed.

A week later, I called again to check, and I was told there was a new problem, which again I was not contacted about. They needed my W-2s, and asked for my 2024 federal form 1040. So in four months, they lost my W-2s. I’ve been paying taxes for 40 years, and I’ve never included my federal taxes with my state taxes – in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware or California. I sent these items by email.

A week later, I got a letter asking me for my W-2s and federal taxes again. I sent my 1040 and W-2s again, but now they want all my federal schedules, which I provided. I emailed twice to prod, and this week, they replied to say they’re going to demand all of my expenses information now. It’s in the mail, so they delayed it another week. We were trading emails, but they decided to mail my next instructions, because apparently they want to continue withholding my refund.

The Delaware tax office wasn’t going to tell me there was a problem. Why didn’t they contact me in March? In April? In May? In June? In July? I had to call – twice. This has been going on for five months now, with no end in sight.

I’m a constituent, and they’re treating me with contempt. I can’t be alone.
