The vehicle vacation traffic began rolling north Monday afternoon, but foot traffic in downtown Dewey Beach was at record levels Tuesday morning.
The Dewey Beach Liquors 5K, run from the Rusty Rudder course, attracted a record number of 537 finishers, including the top 12 breaking 18 minutes, and 31 breaking the 20-minute barrier.
Declan Rymer, 19, of Downingtown, Pa., won the race in 15:54, holding off masters runner Mike Wardian, 48, of Rehoboth, who set an age-group course record in 15:58.
“I wanted to break 16 minutes,” Wardian said. “The runner in front helped me do that. I was glad he was there.”
Runners also breaking 18 minutes were Austin McGinley, 29, 16:08; Jacob Riley, 20, 16:20; Kenny Guy, 19, 16:22; Julian Jones, 20, 16:56; Alex Conlon, 34, 17;22; Chris Walizer, 34, 17:26; Aiden Konetsky, 16, 17:43; Liam Bush, 20, 17:47; Evan Easton, 15, 17:48; and Daniel Klein, 45, 17:56.
Julie Hartenbach, 36, of Springfield, Va., was the first woman and 17th overall finisher in 18:13. Michelle Karsnitz, 38, was second overall female in 21:00, while Anne Ruminski, 41, ran 21:12 for first masters and third overall female.
Jim Batts, 81, of Rehoboth Beach ran 38:15 to set a course record for the 80-and-over division.
Tom Ellis, 70, of Hockessin set a new age-group record by running 21:49.
There were 16 kids in the 9-and-under divisions who ran the entire 5K distance.
