Registration open for Dewey Goes Pink Oct. 6

September 27, 2018

The summer season is beginning to wrap up at The Starboard in Dewey Beach, and that means it’s time to start thinking about the biggest fall weekend in town: Dewey Goes Pink.

Registration is now open for the Gugie Run, a 5K walk/run set for Saturday, Oct. 6, as the cornerstone of the Dewey Goes Pink weekend.

Now in its eighth year, the weekend is a celebration of solidarity and benefits the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, an organization that supports women and their families battling breast cancer in Delaware. It was a favorite organization of Steve “Monty” Montgomery’s mother, for whom the race is named. She was affectionately dubbed “Gugie” by her grandchildren. She lost her 25-year battle with breast cancer, but through the event, the memory of her spirit is turned into joy and camaraderie for an entire community.

Montgomery co-founded the event with his friend Adam Howard, owner of The Body Shop, whose mother has also battled the disease. Both men have been personally affected by breast cancer through their mothers’ diagnoses, but today, the reach of the event extends far beyond their own families.

Montgomery said, ”While this event is something we started in memory and honor of our own moms, today it’s so much more about everyone who participates and their loved ones. This event has become very special to so many in their own way. We thrive on hosting an event that can provide smiles and joy to so many as they celebrate, remember, or honor their own loved ones."

Over the years, Dewey Goes Pink has raised $385,000 for the DBCC, whose focus is breast health and support for local women through resources like transport to cancer screenings and other support services, and providing wigs and blankets. It’s an organization that offers a lifeline to families in need, and connection for those going through the very personal fight against breast cancer.

This year’s event will continue to build on the momentum of the previous years. Last year 2,700 participated in the walk/run, and this year The Starboard is expecting the event to sell out to that capacity once again.

There are lots of ways to be involved in the weekend, from coming out to support the runners and the cause, to running or walking the 5K, and sponsoring a team or the event. Best of all, every dollar donated will stay right here in Delaware, benefitting local community members and their families. To register, go to www.deweygoespink.com.
