Rehoboth Art League holds opening reception for three exhibits

November 2, 2019

The Rehoboth Art League held an opening reception Oct. 18 for three exhibits; “Somewhere Else: Works by the New Image Artist,” “Most wanted, Most Wanted: Print Making, Public Art and Political Action,” Works by Mark Harris, and “From Substance to Silver,” Works by Leyla D. Rzayeva.

In the exhibition “Somewhere Else: Works by the New Image Artist,” each artist was tasked to create two pieces of work. The artist would create new work using one yard of printed fabric in whatever way they desired. As usual for New Image, their work became totally individualized, utilizing a myriad of techniques to take the fabric from flat and print it to dimensional and contemporary. The second quilt began with one yard of printed fabric from a second participating member of New Image.

The exhibit by Mark Harris is a series of linocuts of Mexican artists engaged in public arts, painting murals and doing printmaking, as part of the political struggles following a 1910 to 1920 Mexican Revolution, together with linocuts of iconic leaders of the Mexican War of Independence and revolution. They are assembled as a group installation linking printmaking, public art and political action.

In “From Substance to Silver,” Leyla Rzayeva continues translating the iconography of Central and Western Asia, specifically the regions of Azerbaijan, Samarkand and Caucasus. Her oil painting on canvas and linen uses carefully positioned areas of bright color and figurative outline to talk about feelings, symbols and living rituals. Representations of dancers, musicians, stylized plants, and animals are set against the pigmented background of the canvas.

This exhibition is on display until Nov. 24.
