Rehoboth Art League Painting in Pastel class to begin April 4

March 30, 2019

Local artist John Conroy will lead a Painting in Pastel class from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Thursdays, April 4 to 25, at the Rehoboth Art League.

Participants will explore the color, texture and depth of pastels as a painting medium and learn techniques of layering pigments over pigments.

This beginner class will focus on developing large shapes and the importance of value relationships. In addition, students will be introduced to the various pastels available today as well as the various painting surfaces used by nationally known pastel artists. Students should be familiar with good drawing principles. The cost is $100 for members and $135 for nonmembers.

Conroy’s award-winning paintings have been featured in many regional exhibits from The Academy of Fine Arts Exhibit in Mystic, Conn., to The Pastel Society of America and Salmagundi Club in New York City. In addition to private collections, Conroy's artwork is part of the collections of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., and Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, N.Y.

He studied art at the Art Students League and The School of Visual Arts in New York City, and has been a student of nationally known painters including Robert Brackman, John Howard Sanden and Daniel Green. The focus of Conroy’s work is to bring subjects to life through the relationship of values and composition, and supported by the elements of light and color.
