Rehoboth bakery has best buns on the beach

June 1, 2009
The humidity isn’t the only thing in Rehoboth Beach that will be sticky this summer.

Best Buns On The Beach Bakery, located at 7 S. First St., is entering its ninth year in business and second under the ownership of Margo Parr.

While Parr is technically the owner, she prefers to think of the bakery as being a family effort with help from partner Tony Drew, his sister Francesca Branson and their extended family.

“We have been on the Eastern Shore for four generations,” Parr said of her family. “A couple of us got together and decided we wanted to do a small little venture. This place was close to the family summer home and close to the water.”

The bakery’s primary delicacy is its fresh-baked sticky buns, but it also has donuts, cinnamon rolls, desserts and pastries, breakfast sandwiches, breads and coffee.

Parr said the sticky buns come either plain or with nuts.

“Some people like them with raisins, a lot of people like them with nuts; we primarily do sticky buns and then sticky buns with nuts. Rarely do we do them with raisins,” Parr said.

The sticky buns are made by preparing the dough, which is then proofed. The buns are then glazed, baked in an oven and then flipped upside down.

“It’s much harder than that,” Parr said. “That’s kind of an understatement for how they are prepared. Because occasionally they don’t want to rise like they are supposed to. Sometimes they just don’t want to show up for work. So you just have to work around it.”

Parr said providing a community-oriented, family-friendly bakery was the most important thing for her.

“I want people to know that people can come here and they can send their kids here and they can be comfortable and not worry about anything,” she said.

In closing, Parr described the bakery as, “Grab and go. Boardwalk treats and sweets.”

The bakery is seasonal and currently open daily from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parr said there will be an evening shift in July and August.
