Rehoboth Beach employee saves the day

August 12, 2025

The following letter was sent to Rehoboth Beach City Manager Taylour Tedder and Public Works Director Henry Matlosz with a copy provided to the Cape Gazette for publication.

I would like to highly commend your team member, Mark, who helped me recover my mobile phone last night from a dumpster at the Lincoln Street transfer facility in Rehoboth Beach.

When leaving the beach at the Prospect Street access path earlier in the day, I left a broken beach chair at the trash collection point on the beach. What I forgot to do was take my mobile phone out of a small pocket on the chair.

It was not until later in the evening that I realized that I did not have my phone. My husband and I drove down to Queen Street because we saw two trash collectors emptying trash cans on the Boardwalk. They told me the trash cans on the beach had already been emptied and the trash was on its way to the landfill.

I returned home resigned to buying a new phone the next day, but then remembered that I have the Find Me app. I looked it up and it showed my device was at 20476 Lincoln St. We immediately drove there where we found Mark in his truck preparing to leave for the day.

I explained the situation to him and he immediately came to my assistance. He walked me over to the dumpster area where discarded chairs are placed. My husband and Mark had been calling the phone. As we approached the dumpster, I heard my phone ringing. Mark opened up the dumpster and I recovered the phone from the pocket on the chair I had thrown away earlier in the day.

Mark was a total customer service hero. He was incredibly helpful and kind. He appreciated the gravity of losing one’s phone and was 100% invested in helping me in any way he could.

I wanted to let you know what a great employee you have in Mark, and to thank him publicly for his concern and excellent help.
