Rehoboth Beach writers launch new anthology

October 13, 2019

The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild recently launched its second anthology, “Scenes: A Collaboration of Coastal Writers and Artists,” at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

The event began with a showing of artwork published in the book followed by a performance that incorporated readings, artwork discussions and music by Stuart Vining.

Each chapter of the anthology begins with a color image of one piece of artwork followed by one or more short stories, poems or essays inspired by the art. There are 20 works by local artists in the book and 36 pieces written by Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild members.

“For our book launch performance, we chose five of the book’s art pieces and seven written pieces inspired by those artworks to intertwine with music that relates to the art or stories,” said Maribeth Fischer, RBWG executive director. “During the performance, one or two writers read from their pieces, followed by the artist discussing their work that inspired the writings, followed by Stuart Vining performing a song that relates to the artwork or the writing. Presenting all three arts in one performance allows the audience to experience a theme from three different perspectives. And it is possible that the writer and musician may envision a different theme than the artist intended.”

“Scenes” follows on the success of the guild’s first anthology, “Rehoboth Reimagined.” Released in 2017, this book features short stories, poems, and essays inspired by vintage photographs archived at the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and Museum.

“While similar in concept to our first anthology, the images in the first book were unattributed photos of real people and places,” said Cindy Hall, creator and editor of both books. “Artwork in many styles is the inspiration for writers in ‘Scenes.’ That gives the writer more freedom to explore without being held accountable to a specific time or place.”

She added, “The coastal area has a vibrant arts community. It’s fun to bring together different art forms. The ideas flow when creative people meet, chat, and work with each other on projects ... you never know what will happen next.”
