Rehoboth Concert Band awards scholarship to Grace Kerr

May 24, 2020

Rehoboth Concert Band recently announced Grace Kerr, daughter of Ryan and Shari Kerr of Millsboro, as the recipient of its college scholarship for 2020.

“I am thrilled that Grace is pursuing a career in band directing,” said RCB Conductor Sharon Still. “We definitely need more female instrumental conductors, and I'm sure she will be a great success in directing and educating students.”

Kerr is a graduating senior at Indian River High School, where she has played in the school’s concert, jazz and marching bands. She played in county honor band in both middle and high school, earning the position of first chair flute in county honor band this year. She has been an asset to the flute section of Rehoboth Concert Band since the eighth grade.

Kerr’s leadership skills are as impressive as her musicianship. She served as drum major for the IR band this year and was president of the school’s Tri-M Music Honors Society. In the fall, Grace will attend West Chester University where she plans to pursue a degree in music education.

Responding to the news of her scholarship award, Grace said, “Thank you so much! I am so grateful for [Rehoboth Concert Band] and everything they have done for me!”

This is the second year RCB has awarded a scholarship. To qualify, an applicant must be a member of Rehoboth Concert Band for at least three years, with attendance of 75 percent or better at rehearsals and concerts, be a high school senior with a B average or better, present a letter of recommendation from his or her music teacher, and be accepted into an accredited college or university. Kerr far exceeded the criteria in all categories, and was therefore awarded the 2020 Rehoboth Concert Band Student Scholarship.

The RCB Scholarship is made possible by the generous contributions of band patrons. For more information, go to www.rehobothconcertband.org.
