The footbridge connecting the Silver Lake tot lot to Rehoboth Elementary School is commonly known as Turtle Bridge because so many turtles can be seen there.
New signs at the bridge ask people not to feed the turtles.
Officials from Rehoboth Beach and Save Our Lakes Alliance3 say feeding bread to the turtles and birds in the area creates pollution, causes overcrowding and can help the spread of disease. The new signs show what birds and turtles like to eat: grasses and fish for waterfowl, and microinvertebrates, small animals and water plants for the turtles.
SOLA3 President Sallie Forman and Mayor Paul Kuhns said a healthy diet for turtles helps contributes to a healthy lake environment, which benefits the whole community.
