February 24, 2020

After a tough single-elimination tiebreaker round, Rehoboth Elementary fifth-grader Anna Currence emerged victorious during school-level competition in the first round of the annual National Geographic GeoBee Feb. 6.

As school champion, Anna will next take an online qualifying test for a chance to enter state competition, where up to 100 of the state’s top test scorers will become eligible to compete.

Linden Henderson finished second and Ashton Allen finished third in the competition that covers geography, ancient and world civilizations, cultures and physical features of the natural world.

Fifth-grade teacher Jacquie Kisiel said the competition is important because it increases students’ understanding of world culture and history.

The competition was open to Rehoboth Elementary fourth- and fifth-graders; students in each class were tested in a preliminary competition that selected a homeroom winner and runner-up for the school competition.

State GeoBee winners receive a paid trip to participate in the GeoBee national championship in the spring, where they will compete for cash prizes, scholarships and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll.
