Rehoboth Elementary student’s art recognized

Fifth-grader is Sussex County winner in Arbor Day school poster contest
May 3, 2023

Rehoboth Elementary student Sage McMahon is the fifth-grade Sussex County winner in the Delaware Forest Service’s annual Arbor Day School Poster Contest.

This year’s theme, “Trees are Terrific … in all Shapes and Sizes!” was designed to increase student knowledge about trees and forest resources and inform students about the role trees play in communities and their direct impact on Delawareans’ health and well-being.

The contest, open to students in grades kindergarten through fifth in public, private, home school, after school and other organized youth groups, attracted nearly 7,600 entities from more than 70 schools. Posters were judged on originality, use of theme, neatness and artistic expression.

Twelve winners were selected, one from each county, in four grade categories: kindergarten, grades 1 and 2, grades 3 and 4, and grade 5. Winners received a gift card, a tree-themed book and a tree planting at their school. All participating classes received free loblolly pine seedlings delivered to their school.

The 12 winners were invited to the annual State Arbor Day Celebration, hosted by Gov. John Carney.
