March 8, 2022

Rehoboth Elementary fifth-grader Maryia Dorakhava won first place in the Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project Delaware-Eastern Maryland Water is Life art contest.

The annual contest is open each year to first- through fifth-graders in each state of SERCAP’s seven-state service area. Students submit a drawing representing the theme, and illustrating how and why water is essential for life.

Maryia received a certificate and $100 gift card for her color pencil drawing in the first year Rehoboth Elementary participated in the poster contest.

SERCAP Delaware-Eastern Maryland State Manager Vikki Prettyman presented the award to Maryia Feb. 17.

“We are pleased with the interest shown by Delaware schools in this contest,” Prettyman said. “The pandemic has highlighted the importance of clean water, and that water is one of the essential elements of human life and health. The annual art contest helps us emphasize that with our youngest water consumers, and we hope it’s a concept they will remember for the rest of their lives.”
