Rehoboth Elementary students learn importance of being an upstander

October 17, 2016

Teachers and students at Rehoboth Elementary School recognized anti-bullying efforts by wearing blue on Blue Shirt Monday, Oct. 3. This effort occurs on the first Monday of every October. Blue Shirt Day World Day of Bullying Prevention is celebrated to inspire students to stop cyber-bullying and all types of bullying. The school staff also enjoyed complimentary coffee, cups and upstander sleeves donated by Laura Dye, store manager of the Starbucks on Rehoboth Avenue.

Rehoboth Elementary students started the week with announcements about what it means to be an upstander. These lessons were followed by an assembly Oct. 7 called Sticks and Stones, a musical and dramatic performance that helps children connect to recognize and reflect upon the cause and effect of their own behaviors and the behavior of others.

The students learned how to be upstanders, not bystanders. Themes included identifying when to stand up for peers and speak out to adults.
